葛飾北斎の「北斎漫画」をテーマにした、アーティストとしての佐藤個人のインスタレーション作品。
北斎はその88年間の生涯の中で、本人が「描いても描いても上手くならない」と自己評価をしていた。北斎自身が四季を通じ苦悩しながらも延々と描き続けるストーリーを、何層にも重ねた和紙で構成された構造体に投射した。北斎漫画から四季折々の風物詩をピックアップした場面と、北斎のその絵ひとつひとつの表情や描写の豊かさをストップモーションのように時間を切り取ったイメージで、現代的に手付けのアニメーションで表現した。
The installation work by artist Satoh, themed around Katsushika Hokusai's “Hokusai Manga”.Throughout his 88-year life, Hokusai self-criticized that “no matter how much I draw, I never improve.” The story of Hokusai himself, struggling through the seasons yet endlessly continuing to draw, is projected onto a structure composed of layered Japanese paper. Scenes selected from Hokusai Manga depicting seasonal scenes, along with the rich expressions and detailed depictions found in each of Hokusai's individual paintings, are expressed through contemporary hand-drawn animation. These are rendered as stop-motion-like images, capturing moments frozen in time.
