ニュージーランドなど南半球のごく一部に生息するツチボタル(グローワーム)は、洞窟の天井に張り付き青白い光を発光し、虫を誘き寄せて粘液で絡め取り捕食する。彼らの発光現象は、音や振動などの外的な刺激により一斉に光を放ち、地上の星空と例えられることがある。本作品は、そのツチボタルをオマージュした。各個体が神経伝達物質によって互いに同調連携できていたらと仮定し、周囲の仲間同士で呼応し合う姿を、天吊りしたLEDと制御機器によって、作品に落とし込んだ。人が近接したり、音を発することで光が互いに明滅し合う。
Glow worms found in New Zealand and a few other parts of the southern hemisphere, glow with a blue light that sticks to the ceilings of caves and attracts insects to become entangled in their mucus. Their luminescence is sometimes compared to the starry sky on earth, as they emit light all at once from external stimuli such as sound and vibration. This work pays homage to these glow worms. Assuming that each individual is able to synchronize with each other by means of neurotransmitters, the figure of the individual fireflies responding to each other in the vicinity is incorporated into the work by means of suspended LEDs and control devices. The light flickers when people get close to each other or emit sounds.
